Foldery vs Easy Folders

Both extensions solve the same core problem: AI chat platforms give you a flat, endless list of conversations, and these tools add folders on top. If that's all you need, honestly, either one will do it well.

The real differences are elsewhere. Easy Folders is the established option — years of iteration, 10k+ users, and polish features Foldery doesn't have. Foldery is newer and bets on three things Easy Folders doesn't do: covering Gemini and Perplexity alongside ChatGPT and Claude, reusable context that follows you across models, and sync that is end-to-end encrypted so not even we can read it.

Where Easy Folders is the better choice

Easy Folders has been in the Chrome Web Store for years and it shows — in a good way. It has features Foldery simply doesn't have: bookmarks for saving individual chats outside the folder tree, custom icons on folders (Foldery offers twelve colors, no icons), and automatic folders for your Custom GPTs, which is genuinely useful if you've built a collection of them. Its interface is translated into 50+ languages; Foldery is English-only for now.

There's also the plain reality of maturity. Easy Folders has 10k+ users and years of edge cases already found and fixed. Foldery launched in 2026 and is built by one independent developer. We think that's an advantage in responsiveness — bug reports go straight to the person who wrote the code — but if you want the road-tested option and you live entirely in ChatGPT and Claude, Easy Folders is a perfectly rational choice.

Where Foldery is different

Four platforms, one tree. Easy Folders covers ChatGPT and Claude. Foldery covers those two plus Gemini and Perplexity, in the same sidebar with the same folder tree and one full-text search across everything — and the search indexes actual message content, not just titles. If your work is split across models, this is the difference you'll feel daily.

Context that follows you across models. Give any folder a context — a set of standing instructions — and every new chat you start from that folder inherits it automatically, whether that chat is on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity. The platforms' native answers to this (Projects, Gems) are each locked to their own model. Nothing in Easy Folders does this either. Sync you don't have to trust us on. Foldery is local-first: your conversation content never leaves your device, sync or no sync. If you enable sync (Pro), what syncs is your organization — folder structure, chat titles, prompts, folder context — and all of it is encrypted on your device with a key derived from a passphrase only you hold, before anything is uploaded. Our servers store ciphertext they cannot decrypt: a zero-knowledge model, the same approach password managers like Bitwarden use. Easy Folders offers account-based sync — more convenient if you forget your password, but it's the standard trust-the-vendor model.

The honest flip side of zero-knowledge: if you lose your passphrase, your synced data is permanently inaccessible. Not even we can recover it. Local data on your device is unaffected.

Switching from Easy Folders

Foldery imports your Easy Folders structure directly, so switching doesn't mean rebuilding your folders by hand:

• In Easy Folders: Settings → Backup Folders & Bookmarks to export a JSON backup.
• In Foldery: click Import in the sidebar, select Easy Folders, and upload that file. You'll see a preview of what will be imported before anything is applied.

Your folders, subfolders and chat assignments for ChatGPT and Claude come across; folder colors are mapped to the nearest of Foldery's twelve. Two honest caveats: bookmarks have no Foldery equivalent, so they aren't imported — and Foldery's free tier allows up to 10 folders, so if your Easy Folders tree is bigger than that, you'll want Pro to keep all of it.

And if you ever switch away, everything exports to open JSON, on the free tier. No lock-in in either direction.

The honest bottom line

If your AI life is ChatGPT and Claude and you value maturity and extra conveniences like bookmarks and custom icons, pick Easy Folders — it's the safer, more polished choice for that scope.

If you work across models, want your instructions to travel with you, or care about a sync architecture where the vendor can't read your data rather than promises not to, that's exactly what Foldery was built for — and it's the only one of the two that does any of those three things.
